Dogs or Cats

Dogs and Cats Compared

Which pet is right for you?

The domestic dog is essentially a servant to his master. His feelings for his master are comradely and his manner is familiar; he enjoys and strives for his master's affection and regard. He will go to any length to serve and protect his people/family. He can be easily taught any manner of service and protection tasks and will go about them with great enthusiasm. His life's work is to please.

The domestic cat is quite different. She will serve no one, neither knowingly or willingly. Her one life's task -- the hunting of mice, rats and other rodents -- is instinctive and self taught. Cats cannot be trained to perform a tasks for human benefit, at least not knowingly. There are no police cats, no watch/security cats and no sled cats. The cat does not even come when beckoned, unless it suits her.

Dogs are dependent truly upon humans. They look to humans for companionship, play and their care. They very much enjoy the role of being just a part of the “pack” and will go to great lengths to keep and strengthen that position.

Cats on the other hand are quite self sufficient. You never really have to entertain them, playing with them is usually entertainment for you. This is not to say that they cannot or will not be entertained or that they themselves are not entertaining and playful... Just that their errands are many and their daily schedules full. Cats really prefer going it alone and depending upon their own wit and skill set to survive.

Whether you, the prospective pet owner, choose to share your home with a dog or a cat will depend a great deal on your own personality and routine. If you strive to be in charge, you will easily come to blows with a cat every time. Remember, she cannot be controlled. If you seek true companionship and undying loyalty, then a dog will fill the position most willingly.

There are families, homes and people for both dogs and cats... Examine your expectations carefully and choose the best pet for your environment accordingly. Your home will be blessed with the presence of either pet and you will find great joy in either a dog or a cat.
